I Tried Burger King’s Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper, and I Get the Hype
It's a sweet-heat burger that does not hold back.
I have a confession to make: until this week, I had never eaten a Whopper.
Not because I’m above fast food. I am not above fast food. I would, in fact, happily drift away in a warm pool of KFC mashed potatoes and gravy without a single regret. But when it comes to Burger King—one of the few drive-thru options in my tiny town—I’ve always defaulted to the chicken sandwich. It’s habit. It’s comfort. It’s also, apparently, been keeping me from the chain’s flagship burger.
So when the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper came back to restaurants for the first time since 2024, I decided it was time to correct a lifelong oversight.
What is the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper?
The Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper starts with Burger King’s classic quarter-pound, flame-grilled beef patty and builds from there. On top: maple bourbon barbecue sauce, crispy onions and jalapenos, smoky maple-candied bacon and American cheese, all inside a toasted sesame seed bun. On paper, it reads like a backyard cookout got a little overconfident.
It’s also unapologetically maximal. This isn’t a restrained “hint of flavor” situation. It’s sauce, bacon, heat, cheese—every lever pulled at once. Which, frankly, feels very on-brand for a limited-time Whopper. If you’re going to do it, do it loudly (just like the chain did with the Steakhouse Whopper in January).
And while the ingredient list sounds like it might veer into novelty territory, the structure is smart: sweetness from the sauce, smoke from the bacon and grill, sharp heat from the jalapenos and crunch from the onions.
How does the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper Taste?

In a word? Substantial.
This is not a dainty desk salad. This is a “clear your afternoon calendar” burger. I ate half during lunch and immediately felt the gravitational pull of a post-burger nap. That said, I liked it more than I expected to.
The sauce leans sweet, though I didn’t get a strong maple vibe. If you’d blindfolded me, my brain wouldn’t have immediately shouted, “Ah, yes, maple!” It’s more of a general, processed sweetness—the sort you expect from a fast-food barbecue sauce.
Where the burger really works is in the texture and heat. The mixture of crisp jalapenos and onions brings a noticeable kick and a bright, vinegary edge that cuts through the richness. Their crunch keeps the whole thing from feeling one-note. The bacon was impressively crisp, not at all limp or flabby (as is so often the case with fast-food bacon).
The burger patty itself does what it’s supposed to: delivers the meaty, char-broiled flavor it’s known for. Combined with the sweet sauce, salty bacon and spicy peppers, the overall effect is balanced, even if it is undeniably heavy.
Would I crave it every week? Probably not. But as a limited-time, slightly over-the-top fast-food moment, it’s solid. And for someone who had never eaten a Whopper before, it was a surprisingly strong introduction.
How long will the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper be available?
While we love when chains bring back fan-favorites, this Maple Bacon BBQ Whopper is only available for a limited time. This usually means it will disappear faster than you’d expect, so if you missed it last time or you’ve been desperately waiting for it to return, I’d go to your nearest BK as soon as possible!
